"Melissa was fabulous! She listened to the brief, and gave great ideas we would never have thought about. After we bounced around a few things, she came up with a 3D plan for our house that looks amazing - and that helps to make it very clear for the builders what the end result should look like."

Interior Design & Renovation FAQs (Sydney)

Planning a renovation in Sydney? At Positive Space Design, we know renovations can feel overwhelming. These are the most common questions we’re asked about space planning and working with an interior designer.

1. How much does an interior designer cost in Sydney?

Interior design fees in Sydney vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. At Positive Space Design, we provide clear, tailored pricing for your project, so you know exactly what to expect upfront; no hidden surprises. The right designer will also help you avoid costly mistakes, often saving more than their fee in the long run. When you’re thinking about cost, also consider how you value your time, and therefore how much time and sanity your Interior Designer can save.

2. What does an interior designer do during a renovation?

An Interior Designer does much more than choose colours and finishes. We manage the design vision from concept through to completion. We look at how you live day-to-day, then plan your home to make it functional, comfortable, and beautiful. This can include space planning (we call it Floor Plan Tetris), kitchen and bathroom design, selection of finishes, fittings, and fixtures, creation of all interior 2D plans and 3D renders, coordination and liaison with builders and trades.
Our role is to take the stress off your shoulders and guide you through each decision with confidence, to a beautiful, functional, cohesive result.

3. How do I choose the right Sydney Interior Designer?

The best Interior Designer for you is a very personal choice.
Look for a designer who understands your lifestyle and listens to your needs. Check their portfolio, ask about their process, and read reviews from past clients. Make sure you’re comfortable with them in your home, being deeply involved in your family life for the duration of the project. Also make sure you’re comfortable discussing budgets with them (money chats are always a little uncomfortable, but being upfront is vital).
At Positive Space Design, we don’t have a particular aesthetic; we aim to find out your aesthetic, and bring that to life in your home. Our clients tell us they value our calm, structured approach, trusted supplier networks, clear communication, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing we’re across every detail.

4. Can an interior designer help maximise space in my home?

Absolutely! This is one of the biggest reasons clients come to us, and one of our favourite aspects of interior design. Smart space planning (AKA Floor Plan Tetris) can transform how your home feels and functions. Whether it’s reconfiguring a floor plan to create better flow, making a compact kitchen feel larger, or designing storage solutions that actually work, we make every square metre count.

5. Do I need an interior designer if I already have a builder or architect?

Builders and architects are essential to the renovation process, but their focus is different from an interior designer’s. An architect designs structure, a builder executes the work, and an interior designer ensures the end result reflects your aesthetic, lifestyle and vision. We bridge the gap; making sure practical details, finishes, and flow all come together beautifully. Clients often tell us we were the “safety net” that kept their renovation on track, and helped avoid costly missteps.
